In 1896, Mauser introduced the Mauser C96 Self-loading Pistol chambered in 7.63mm. Known as the 'Broomhandle', approximately 1 million were produced until production ended in 1937. Markings: The top of the barrel extension’s chamber ring is marked “WAFFENFABRIK / MAUSER / OBERNDORF/N”, the left shoulder is marked “433001” and the left has a crowned “U”. The bottom of the barrel has inspection markings. The right of the frame has “WAFFENFABRIK MAUSER / OVERNDORF A NECKAR”. The top of the bolt stop is marked “3001”. The top of the bolt at the rear is marked with a crowned “U” and “3001”. The bottom of the bolt locking block is marked “3001” and the side of the sear disconnect is marked “001”. The rear face of the frame and the rear face of the lock frame are each marked “433001”. The rear of the hammer has “NS” monogram (new safety) and “001”. The top of the magazine floorplate is marked “3001”. The inside of each grip panel is hand scribed “433001”.

Sights / Optics: The rear sight is a “V” notched rear sliding elevator sight with markings from “50-500” that is pinned to the barrel extension. The front sight is a brass blade in a slotted base forged to the front of the barrel (not original).
Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are two-piece checkered black hard rubber with “WM” monogram in shield at their tops. The grips show light-moderate handling wear with some areas of smoothed checkers and a few scattered light nicks and scratches. The left panel has a small loss at the top-front edge. There are no cracks. Overall, the grips are in about Good-plus condition.

Bore Condition: The lands are mostly bright, the grooves are gray. The rifling shows wear, but is well defined. There is light erosion scattered through the bore.
Overall Condition: This pistol retains about 65% of its metal finish. The finish is thinning at all edges. There is scattered light finish wear with remaining finish mottled with a light patina. Strongest finish is in the middle of flats. The action shows operational wear and the controls have handling wear. The magazine spring is broken at the first fold below the follower. The screw head is tool marked with a strong slot. The markings are generally clear, some are worn. Overall, this pistol is in about Good-plus condition.
Mechanics: The magazine spring is broken at the first fold below the follower. Otherwise, the action functions correctly. The trigger is crisp. We did not fire this pistol. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards

Our Assessment: The Broomhandle Model 1896 Mauser is certainly an interesting looking firearm. Its features are the most distinctive of any other pistol. In addition to being popularized in Soviet films as the iconic weapon of the Russian revolution and civil war, it was also used as a basis for futuristic weapons like the blaster used by Han Solo in Star Wars. This pistol was made between 1915-1921 and shows honest wear consistent with its age. It has all matching numbered parts including its grips and the bore is decent for a gun of its age. Apart from a break in the magazine spring, the mechanics are still strong. Once that spring is replaced, this will make for a nice shooter or collector piece. Please see our photos and good luck!
